Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

On the first Saturday of every month, the Calvary Temple Young Adults gather together for a Bible teaching.

This week, Pastor Jon Miller taught about the importance of being filled with the Spirit of God to be ambassadors for Christ. He started the teaching with reminding us that we are the children of God, we are the heirs and joint heirs with Christ Jesus.

We turned to John chapter 4 to look at the verse where Jesus told his disciples, But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” (John 4:32 ESV) Through this passage, Pastor Jon encouraged us with the principle, Without God you will not have love for souls.

Pastor Jon gave a list of three things that God gave to this earth to get his gospel into the hearts of unbelievers –

God so loved the world that he gave:

1. Gave his only son (John 3:16)

2. God gave the church, the extension of God’s power in this world (Luke 24:47-49)

3. God gave His Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5, 8/ Acts 2:17)

Pastor Jon stressed through the teaching that we need the power of the Holy Spirit to affect lost souls. We cannot have religion and programs without the Holy Spirit and expect to impact our community for Christ.

Pastor Jon continued with the point that we as the church of Jesus Christ are the physical representation of Jesus on this earth. The challenge to you, today is: are you representing Jesus in your daily living?

This starts with being filled with the Holy Spirit and taking the message of the gospel into a lost and dying world. If you don’t have that power today, God promised that he would pour out his Spirit on all men. There is a fountain available for you to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Calvary Temple Young Adult Retreat

YA 09-14 Campout

Each year the Calvary Temple Young Adults take a retreat to the Shenandoah Valley.

This year the theme of the retreat was “Seek first the Kingdom” from the scripture Matthew 6:33.

The retreat is a time to mainly get refreshed spiritually but it is also a time to get away from the busyness of northern Virginia and get quiet as well as spend time with other members of the young adult group.

For years now, the young adults have enjoyed great food, fellowship and fun games! This year was no exception. In honor of one of the missionaries at Calvary, the group played Skyball on Friday afternoon. Ethan’s team won by 2 runs! After that, some of the young adults rested or got time in the Word while the rest of the group took a hike to Buzzard Rock.

The teachings throughout the retreat were excellent. Pastor Jeff, Pastor Jon and Pastor Jimmy all taught on the importance of prioritizing the Kingdom of God above all else. Some of the most memorable quotes from the teachings include:

“Let God be the God of all your tomorrows.”

“What effort are you putting forth to win souls for the Kingdom of God?”

“Seeking first the Kingdom of God is a choice, and a continual choice.”

“Are you coming to God in the shadows? Are you afraid to be associated with Him?”

“What holds you back from completely being a disciple of Jesus?”

Each teaching during the retreat was meaningful in different ways. Seeking the Kingdom of God is a challenge in the world today as Satan continually tries to distract Christians with all the things that the world has to offer. The retreat was once again an excellent reminder of how we need to focus on our Heavenly Father and not on the cares of this life.

See the pictures below for a few highlights of the trip! Stay tuned to the Young Adult blog as well as everything else that is happening at Calvary Temple.

Calvary Temple, Sterling, VA – Recapping the summer Finish the Race Car Show

It was another gorgeous day at the Finish the Race Car and Motorcycle show last Saturday at Calvary Temple. It seems that every car show we have perfect weather and a growing number of cars and motorcycles that roll into the parking lot. (Check out the panoramic picture attached)

The young adults are privileged to be heavily involved in the preparation and production of the event. From music ministry to interviews to food service, the young adult group at Calvary Temple is at the heart of each and every outreach.

It all goes back to the scripture that we all have been taught since we were young, Luke 12:48: Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. Many of the young adults have been raised and trained at Calvary Temple, so our hearts are to give back to the community.

Several of the car owners and attendees were taken back by the number of young people at Calvary Temple. We simply tell them, God has given us so much, we want to give back to Him. With over 300 cars and motorcycles at this event, there is no telling how many lives were touched for the gospel of Jesus.

Keep up with all that we do at Finish the Race Ministries. Tune in next week for some great interviews and comments from some of the car owners!

Gospel Movie Night

Each year, Calvary Temple hosts a Gospel Movie Night on the grounds in Sterling. This year, we showed the movie “God’s Not Dead”.

The movie was moving in many ways as a young college student used the Bible to prove to his unbelieving philosophy professor that God is, indeed alive.

This year we had over 250 visitors come to the movie night. We set up a large screen on the lawn and people bring chairs and blankets to enjoy a movie under the stars. We also offer games, sports challenges, skits and live music.

Pastor Jon Miller spoke at the event encouraging the visitors to “Get in the Ark” based on the Bible story of Noah. It is important for each one of us to prepare for the Lord’s soon return.

If you missed the Movie night this year, be sure to check out our events calendar over at Calvary Temple.

Next, on the docket is our second Finish the Race Car show, next Saturday August 16th from noon to 4 pm. Come out and join us!

Calvary Temple Young Adult Formal

While our Calvary Temple Young Adult Event Calendar varies each year, the controversial Young Adult Formal comes every April.  (Controversial in the sense that…every year, it gets harder and harder to get people dressed up in one place!)  Despite the debate, everyone always ends up having a great time.  It’s a nice opportunity to reflect on everything God has done in our lives and to enjoy each other’s company.
One week each year, the entire high school decorates for their  formal dinner.  The Young Adult group commandeers the decorations for our own dinner the next night.  This year’s theme was California Road Trip, and the room was split between the Redwood Forest, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Hollywood.
Our wonderful group of volunteers served a four course meal that included honey-butter rolls, salad, rib-eye steak, feta orzo salad, and chocolate peanut butter pie.  After dinner, Pastor Jeff organized a lively round of….the clapping/rhythm/king game… (Is there even an official name?)  In true Calvary Temple fashion, the competition was fierce.  We also learned that some people are not very good at keeping rhythm, remembering two digit numbers, or clapping.
After the games wrapped up, people dispersed to take pictures with their friends, and judging from the smiles on everyone’s faces, it looks like the night was a success!

Calvary Temple Young Adults April Activity – Spades Tournament

This month, the Calvary Temple Young Adult group got together for a Spades Tournament. In what has turned into a Calvary Temple tradition, the Young Adults gathered to see who could be crowned Spades Champion in 2014.

Eight divisions made up of four teams each battled in a round robin format to determine which teams would make the “Elite 8”.

After fighting through the Elite 8, some of the usual suspects, Pastor Jon and Dave as well as Landon and Dawn made it to the Final Round. Pastor Jon and Dave won the tournament in 2012 while Landon and Dawn were trying to defend their title from 2013.

After some intense competition, the two teams tied for 1st place after finishing with the same score! They will surely settle the score next year!

Calvary Temple Young Adult Meeting, April 2014 – “Wait on God”

On the first Saturday of each month, the Young Adult group at Calvary Temple gets together for a Bible study and small groups.

Typically Pastor Jeff Heglund teaches the meeting and shares what the Lord is doing in his life personally as well as how to practically apply the recent teachings from Pastor Scott in our lives.

This month, Pastor Jeff taught about how the Lord is really teaching him to Wait on Him. He opened the meeting with a passage from Isaiah, but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31 ESV)

If we wait on him, he will answer our prayers in His timing. Often times, the hardest part about serving God is waiting on his promises to us through the Word of God because we want everything in our timing.

One of the main points from the meeting was: Trusting God involves faith. “Faith comes by having an audience with God and waiting for him.” Spending time with Father will give us, his children, the ability to rely on him and have confidence that he will answer us if we wait on Him.

Pastor Jeff concluding the meeting with a powerful scripture and quote: Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. (Isaiah 30:18 ESV) Finally, Pastor Jeff encouraged the group with the quote: “Wait on God and let him infuse your heart and life with his goodness and life.”

The April meeting was a great reminder for all of us to let God do the work in our lives and trust Him through the process.

Finish the Race Car Show, April 2014

Another incredible Finish the Race Car Show is in the books for 2014. The turnout was fantastic and the weather was perfect. It is always incredible to be apart of such a great ministry that Pastor Star Scott started nearly 20 years ago. (Read more at Finish The Race)

Ever since I was a youngster, I have gone to car shows and drag races with my dad. I always think of the great memories and thoroughly enjoy being a small piece of Finish the Race Ministries. Today I am involved in the Media Team with Finish the Race, where I interview some of the car owners that come out to our shows. I love hearing the stories of how people got their cars or have customized them.

More than anything, it is a privilege for me to carry out the vision Pastor Scott has through Finish the Race Ministries to share the gospel of Jesus with a different crowd than we normally get to hang out with. The car crowd is a passionate crowd that is excited about the things they love. That same passion turned for the Kingdom of God is what I want to see!

Check out some pictures I took of just a few of the beautiful cars at the spring Finish the Race Car Show at Calvary Temple on Saturday, April 12th. If you missed us this time, don’t worry, our next show is August 16th. Come see us then! For more photos and videos, please visit keyword: FinishtheRaceVA on YouTube.

Calvary Temple Young Adult Olympics

Last month, the Calvary Temple Young Adults held an Olympic competition of their own. During the peak of the world’s greatest sporting event, the Calvary young adults divided into three countries to compete for some medals (bragging rights) of their own. The participants were divided into three countries; Russia, Germany and Sweden. The events at the Olympics were bobsledding, ice skating and hockey.

Bobsledding was the opening event and provided some good entertainment. The bobsled was made out of wood, and had wheels on the bottom of the sled. The contestants had to stay within the cones or get penalized. The event was won by the team with the fastest time through the course.

Next on the event circuit was ice skating. As you can see from the pictures below, ice skating was the event of the afternoon. Couples competed against each other and were judged on outfits, creativity, lifts and spins. The catch? Skating was done on the gym floor with pillow cases as “skates”. Sweden would take the Gold in Ice Skating!

After two events, all three teams were tied with 4 points. Hockey was the final event of the competition and Sweden came out victorious with an impressive performance. Sweden would take home the Gold and the bragging rights for the next two years!
