November Young Adult Meeting Recap

“Men of Another Spirit”

Pastor Jeff spoke an anointed message on Saturday morning that was very timely for our Young Adult group. His message entitled “Men of Another Spirit” challenged the group to search their heart and see if they are doing everything that God has called them to do.

Take a look at some of the notes from the meeting.

Are you willing to pick up everything and forsake all to empty yourself for the Kingdom?

Ways that we can be men and women of another sort:

  • A spark that continues to grow rather than flame out.
  • Set your face to seek God
  • Having your own convictions that align with the Word of God
  • No compromise.
  • Consistent and diligent in seeking the Lord.
  • Stay alert for the enemy’s tactics and the Lords return.

Are you part of the generation that begins to tolerate and accept the areas that were set before us as things that should be avoided? Is the world’s system eroding your convictions?

Do you truly realize that everything that you have been given is from the Lord?

Are you more of a giver or a taker? Not just in what you do, but in the Spirit.

Are you speaking the language of the world and the language of the Kingdom?

What decisions are you making to bring unity to the body of Christ?

The point that challenged me the most was when Pastor Jeff asked if we are a giver or a taker? Doing things at church doesn’t make you a giver. Having the heart of a servant is what makes you a giver. Ask yourself today, are you a giver or a taker? Are you a man or woman of another spirit?

June Young Adult Meeting Recap

“Know God and Take Action”

This month, Pastor Jeff encouraged the Young Adult Group to examine their hearts to see if they are being obedient in every area of our lives. He asked, are we taking action in the areas that God has spoken to our lives.

I can’t say it any better than Pastor Jeff did, take a look at some of the specific notes and quotes from Saturday’s meeting.

If we are going to see the power of God we need to be a people that know their God.

The saddest thing is to be a Christian in word only.

The enemy does not want us to be who God has called us to be.

If we are going to see the power of God, we need to be a people of action.

You’ll never have more joy and peace when you’re wholly following the Lord.

Choose the power of God in your life. As you step out of your comfort zone, that’s when the power comes!

I think a great question to leave you with this month is one of Pastor Jeff’s closing remarks: What is keeping the power of God from flowing through you freely?

Examine your heart and life and ask God to help you take action in the areas that He is speaking to your heart!

Calvary Temple VA – April YA Meeting Recap

“Trusting the Lord”

On the first Saturday of each month, Pastor Jeff gathers the Calvary Temple Young Adult group to discuss the Word of God. This month’s topic was trusting the Lord. Pastor Jeff started the meeting with the question, Are you looking at the current trials that we are facing as good for you and your family to prepare for the coming of the Lord?

Pastor Jeff gave some reasons why we trust Jesus-

1. He is completely sovereign,
2. He is King of all Kings and Lord of all Lords
3. He always orders every aspect of our life

He continued to encourage the group with the challenge, We are not a people that turn back once we have put our hands to the plow. We have the armor of God. All true Christians during this day and age are going to be persecuted, hated and despised.

Pastor Jeff gave numerous scriptures throughout the meeting that will be an encouragement to you –

who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭4‬ ESV)

For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭10-11‬ ESV)

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭10‬ ESV)

For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, (‭Hebrews‬ ‭10‬:‭30-32‬ ESV)

I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; (‭Job‬ ‭42‬:‭5‬ ESV)

Pastor Jeff made some final encouragements to the group, It’s is sin to be anxious about the future. Think of things that are lovely and of a good report. Are you allowing the Lord to work a greater relationship and dependence on Him through times of suffering?

We need to struggle and be persecuted to endure and make it to the end.

I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. (‭Revelation‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬ ESV)

I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. (‭Psalm‬ ‭16‬:‭8‬ ESV)

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? (‭Psalm‬ ‭56‬:‭3-4‬ ESV)

Final thoughts for you as we close, We must choose to trust God in every circumstance. We must make the choice to trust the Lord. Do you trust the Lord in every area of your life?

January Young Adult Meeting Recap

Bible Page

This month, Pastor Jeff encouraged the Calvary Temple Young Adult group to be sent of the Lord. As a Christian, often times we ask ourselves, what is my calling? What am I supposed to do for God? The answer often can be as simple as, be obedient to whatever God has told you to do through his Word and through those over you, and he will continue to reveal Himself to you. Take a look at some of the key points and scriptures from the meeting:

Am I so bold that all those around me hate me because of the gospel of Jesus?

And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” (‭Judges‬ ‭6‬:‭14‬ ESV)

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, (‭Titus‬ ‭2‬:‭11-13‬ ESV)

Who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. (‭Titus‬ ‭2‬:‭14‬ ESV)

Pastor Jeff asked the group, what good works are you being zealous for? Here are some of the responses:

  • Encourage those around you
  • Share the gospel and use ministry opportunities to the fullest
  • Share the gospel and being bold in the workplace
  • Obedience to the voice of the Spirit
  • Seek first the Kingdom, keep the eternal perspective in the forefront of your mind.

What about you? What are you striving toward in the Kingdom?

For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. (‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4‬:‭17-18‬ ESV)

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. (‭1 Peter‬ ‭4‬:‭12-13‬ ESV)

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭18‬ ESV)

Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice! [Ps. 37:4.] (‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬ AMP)

You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. (‭James‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ ESV)

Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. (‭Matthew‬ ‭24‬:‭44-46‬ ESV)

Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (‭Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭39‬ ESV)

Pastor Jeff’s final encouragement to the group was to study God’s Word about the return of the Lord, the Rapture and the Second Coming.

If you have an eternal mindset, and are continually aware the the coming of the Lord could be at any time, you will go in boldness and share the gospel to the lost. I hope this encourages you to set out for the Kingdom.

Calvary Temple Young Adult Winter 2014 Event Recap

The Calvary Temple Young Adults were at it again late in 2014 with two exciting events. First in November was the construction and testing of “war machines”.

Each team of 7-8 individuals had to come up with an original idea for a “war machine” that would launch a tennis ball and destroy opposing teams castles, built of paper. The teams were given one week to complete the task and the designs and execution could not have been more different.

Here are a few shots behind the scenes of the construction of one of the war machines:

On November 15th, the war machines were put to the test in the gym at Calvary Temple. Danny’s Christmas elves team outlasted the rest for the victory! Take a look at a few of the teams:

Remember that each first Saturday of the month, the Young Adults gather for Bible study and small groups at Calvary Temple. And each third Saturday of the month, the Young Adults gather for a team building activity.

In December, the group went a little more traditional with some ice skating at Reston Town Center. Young and old alike came out to enjoy some time on the ice. Can you find the next Olympian? Take a look:

The Young Adult group at Calvary Temple certainly has fun, but the goal of all these events is to grow in relationships with one another and become more like Jesus. Come join our Young Adult group to grow in your faith in Jesus and establish relationships that are eternal!

Tune in for more in 2015!

2014 Halloween Outreach Recap

Long time young adult member Kristy Lawrence recaps the Calvary Temple Halloween Outreach that she put together this year. It was truly an impactful event on our community. We are so thankful for members of the Young Adult group like Kristy who continue to spread the gospel and have a heart for the lost in our community.

Here is her recap of the event:

A little over a month ago, we felt like God laid it on our heart’s to be on the offensive and  take advantage of a great opportunity on Halloween night to get the gospel of Jesus out to the kids in our community. A lot of our Young Adult group got together to make it happen.

The Lord did many miracles, as we stepped out in faith, and we got a great location to do the outreach! We had a treasure hunt available for the kids to do where they got to stop at 4 different stops and hear Bible stories. We also had games, candy and goodie bags with gospel tracts in them. Everywhere they went there was something about the gospel and the Lord allowed us to reach 120 souls that night! Praise God!!

Continue to look for lost souls in your community to impact for the gospel!

Know God, and Preach the Word

Know God, and Preach the Word

This month in the first Saturday Calvary Temple Young Adults meeting, Pastor Jeff challenged us from the passage in Mark 3 which reads, “And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach” (‭Mark‬ ‭3‬:‭13-14‬ ESV)

Pastor Jeff stressed the fact that for us to be sent out to preach, and to go in power, we must be with Him first. He continued with other challenges, “How faithful are you in your calling to be with The Lord and go forth and preach?” The importance of preaching God’s Word to this dying world comes into context in Revelation:

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. (‭Revelation‬ ‭20‬:‭11-12‬ ESV)

One day, we are going to stand before the Great and Mighty Judge, and sinners will be judged. Does that sober you? Pastor Jeff asked us how we are going to be humble and overcome the world’s draw on us and go forth. He said, “Our only hope to break the idealism and philosophy of the world is to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.”

We were then given a list of the attributes of Jesus that will allow us to walk as He walked:
Those Attributes of Jesus that we will experience if we are walking as He walked:

  • full of power
  • full of the Holy Ghost
  • the servant of All
  • walked in absolute surrender to the Will of his Father

Do these attributes describe your life? Or do you have some work to do to be more like Him?

One of the main aspects from the teaching was that, the first step of being filled with the Holy Spirit is knowing your Father intimately.

Pastor Jeff then challenged us with a quote from a missionary he was reading about who said, “Are you doing everything you can do with everything that you have to make sure that people know Jesus?” What a great and humbling challenge. If we are really honest with our hearts, are we truly doing everything? Ask yourself that question today.

Pastor Jeff then finished the teaching with some great challenges and reminders:

  • To see the Spirit move and to see revival we must be intercessors
  • Are your thoughts and mind consumed with sharing the gospel?
  • Are we fasting the things that we enjoy in this temporal life to be able to get away and hear from God?

The final challenge I will leave you with for this month is this verse from Isaiah:
On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth. (‭Isaiah‬ ‭62‬:‭6-7‬ ESV)

Are you a watchman today? Know God, and Preach the Word.

Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

On the first Saturday of every month, the Calvary Temple Young Adults gather together for a Bible teaching.

This week, Pastor Jon Miller taught about the importance of being filled with the Spirit of God to be ambassadors for Christ. He started the teaching with reminding us that we are the children of God, we are the heirs and joint heirs with Christ Jesus.

We turned to John chapter 4 to look at the verse where Jesus told his disciples, But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” (John 4:32 ESV) Through this passage, Pastor Jon encouraged us with the principle, Without God you will not have love for souls.

Pastor Jon gave a list of three things that God gave to this earth to get his gospel into the hearts of unbelievers –

God so loved the world that he gave:

1. Gave his only son (John 3:16)

2. God gave the church, the extension of God’s power in this world (Luke 24:47-49)

3. God gave His Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5, 8/ Acts 2:17)

Pastor Jon stressed through the teaching that we need the power of the Holy Spirit to affect lost souls. We cannot have religion and programs without the Holy Spirit and expect to impact our community for Christ.

Pastor Jon continued with the point that we as the church of Jesus Christ are the physical representation of Jesus on this earth. The challenge to you, today is: are you representing Jesus in your daily living?

This starts with being filled with the Holy Spirit and taking the message of the gospel into a lost and dying world. If you don’t have that power today, God promised that he would pour out his Spirit on all men. There is a fountain available for you to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Calvary Temple Young Adult Retreat

YA 09-14 Campout

Each year the Calvary Temple Young Adults take a retreat to the Shenandoah Valley.

This year the theme of the retreat was “Seek first the Kingdom” from the scripture Matthew 6:33.

The retreat is a time to mainly get refreshed spiritually but it is also a time to get away from the busyness of northern Virginia and get quiet as well as spend time with other members of the young adult group.

For years now, the young adults have enjoyed great food, fellowship and fun games! This year was no exception. In honor of one of the missionaries at Calvary, the group played Skyball on Friday afternoon. Ethan’s team won by 2 runs! After that, some of the young adults rested or got time in the Word while the rest of the group took a hike to Buzzard Rock.

The teachings throughout the retreat were excellent. Pastor Jeff, Pastor Jon and Pastor Jimmy all taught on the importance of prioritizing the Kingdom of God above all else. Some of the most memorable quotes from the teachings include:

“Let God be the God of all your tomorrows.”

“What effort are you putting forth to win souls for the Kingdom of God?”

“Seeking first the Kingdom of God is a choice, and a continual choice.”

“Are you coming to God in the shadows? Are you afraid to be associated with Him?”

“What holds you back from completely being a disciple of Jesus?”

Each teaching during the retreat was meaningful in different ways. Seeking the Kingdom of God is a challenge in the world today as Satan continually tries to distract Christians with all the things that the world has to offer. The retreat was once again an excellent reminder of how we need to focus on our Heavenly Father and not on the cares of this life.

See the pictures below for a few highlights of the trip! Stay tuned to the Young Adult blog as well as everything else that is happening at Calvary Temple.

Calvary Temple Young Adults April Activity – Spades Tournament

This month, the Calvary Temple Young Adult group got together for a Spades Tournament. In what has turned into a Calvary Temple tradition, the Young Adults gathered to see who could be crowned Spades Champion in 2014.

Eight divisions made up of four teams each battled in a round robin format to determine which teams would make the “Elite 8”.

After fighting through the Elite 8, some of the usual suspects, Pastor Jon and Dave as well as Landon and Dawn made it to the Final Round. Pastor Jon and Dave won the tournament in 2012 while Landon and Dawn were trying to defend their title from 2013.

After some intense competition, the two teams tied for 1st place after finishing with the same score! They will surely settle the score next year!
